Good fishing again today up north. The break is down 80 feet, but the Kings didn’t seem to mind biting in 65 + degree water. We fished the bank down past the Point and then took it out to 180 to 210 feet of water(fow). Our riggers were good early with mag size spoons set at 70, 80 & 90 feet. We heard of several boats doing good on plugs, but we didn’t hit one fish on them. We hit a several fish on our wire divers, but had a hard time holding on to them. They would make a good run and be gone. Our best wire setup out deep was a 10″ Purple Sparkler Spin Doctor/Purple UV Big Water Meat Rig out 260 on a high wire. We use Erie dearie Meat on all our meat rigs.
Archives for August 2013
The fishing has been good the last couple days up north. Boats were catching fish in tight, 50 to 70 ft., and outside, 140 to 200, and all depths in between. Plugs on 10 color cores and 150, 200, & 250 coppers have been good early and later in the morning we have been switching over to spoons and meat rigs on our coppers. Our 2 top plugs have been the Natural Glow and Lucky Charm Dreamweaver Cut Plugs. We have been starting out with a pair of Fuzzy Bear Yellow Tail’s and a pair of DW Beefeaters on the out downs and an 11″ White Crush Paddle/Pickled Sunshine Actin Fly on the chute rigger. Our out downs this morning wee set at 70 & 80 ft. and the chute was at 90 ft. Our wire divers were no big deal today. We took a couple Kings on 10″ Margareta Spin Doctors/Green Mile Big Water Meat Rigs on our low wires set 135 & 155 back later in the morning. Our high wires with 10″ Kevin’s Girlfriend Spin Doctors /Green Mile & Froggie Big Water Meat Rigs out 220 & 230 each took a fish early. A 350 copper with a 10″ Chrome Mountain Dew Spin Doctor/Moo Moo Big Water Rig took 2 big Kings out in 180 feet of water. We use Erie Dearie Meat on all our meat rigs.
The weatherman was half right today. Predictions of 4 to 5 ft. waves were wrong, but we did get thunderstorms. We had to cut our trip short due to lighting in the air. The early bite was good up north. We were fishing between 140 & 100 feet of water (fow). Our hot rig today was a pair of Fuzzy Bear Yellow Tail spoons 75 down on an out down. We had mag size for the main and a regular sliding above it. We ended up putting the same combo on our other out down at 85 ft. and that took a couple bites too. We had our high wires set at 200 and 155 with 10″ Kevin’s Girlfriend Spin Doctors and Froggie and Green Mile Big Water Meat Rigs. We only had 1 low wire bite and that came on a 10″ Black Crush Spin Doctor/Froggie Big Water Rig out 110 ft. A mag size DW Beefeater spoon on a 300 copper took our last fish before the lightning chased us off the Lake. We use Erie Dearie Meat on all our meat rigs.
The wind was blowing pretty hard this morning form the ssw. Our crew wanted to go so we headed north setting up just off the bank. The water had warmed some from yesterday so we didn’t run any 5 or 8 color cores. We put plugs on a 10 color core, 150 & 200 coppers with Dreamweaver Lucky Charms an Green Splatter Back Cut Plugs. They all went during the morning bite. We missed a nice fish 70 down on an out down with a pair of DW Beefeater spoons and took a King 50 down on another Green Splatter Back cut plug. Those were our only 2 rigger bites all day. Our wire divers took most of our bites. Once again it was the 10″ Kevin’s Girlfriend Spin Doctor with Froggie and Green Mile Big Water Meat Rigs on our high wires coming through for us. We had one out 155 ft. and the other out 115 ft. We took our biggest fish of the season today a 26.69 pounder on one of the high wires. We use Erie Dearie Meat on all our meat rigs.
Fished up north again today between 70 & 90 feet of water (fow). There was heavy boat traffic. We got boxed in and couldn’t get out until we were well north of the Point. Our morning bite was decent, 8 bites – 4 fish. Six of those bite came on plugs on 5 & 8 color cores. Our best plug was a Dreamweaver Lucky Charm Captain’s Choice Cut Plug and the Green Splatter Back Cut Plug was a close second. We had 3 diver bites today, 2 on a 10″ Kevin’s Girlfriend Spin Doctor/Froggie Big Water Meat Rig out 125 on a high wire and 1 on a 10″ Showtime Spin Doctor/Blue Moo Big Water Rig out 70 on a low wire. Only 1 rigger bite, that was on an 11″ White Crush Paddle/Pickled Sunshine Action Fly down 65 on the chute rigger. We only had a few bites after the morning flurry and finished 6 for 11.
We have been fishing north the last two days between 110 and 180 feet of water (fow) . The morning bite has been good, and for us the afternoon bite yesterday was late. Our most consistent rod has been a high wire diver out 200 ft. with a 10″ Kevin’s Girlfriend Spin Doctor/Froggie Big Water Meat Rig. That same setup took a big King on a 200 copper today. A 10″ White Crush Mountain Dew Spin Doctor/Moo Moo Big Water Meat Rig Meat Rig has been good on a 300 copper. Yesterday plugs were working on our 8 & 10 color cores, but not today. An 11″ White Crush Dreamweaver Paddle/Pickled Sunshine Action Fly down 100 ft. on our chute rigger went 4 times. We had 85 down today because the water was a little colder and it went once. We didn’t have any spoon bites today. These fish are BIG. Most of todays catch was over 20 lbs. Our biggest, 25.65 lbs., came on a low wire diver out 125 ft. with a 10″ Chrome Frog Spin Doctor/Chrome Frog DW Meat Rig. We use Erie Dearie Meat on all our meat rigs.
We fished north today and the fishing was good early. First 2 rods to go were a 5 & 7 color cores with plugs. The Dreamweaver Natural Glow Captains Choice Cut Plug was our top plug again this morning. Our wire divers took most of fish today. 10″ Kevin’s Girlfriend Spin Doctors with Green Mile & Froggie Big Water Meat Rigs were on our high wires and one low wire. A Dark Green White Crush 10″ Spin Doctor /Froggie Big Water Rig was on the other low wire. The highs were out 150 & 135 ft. and the lows were out 85 & 70 ft. The north troll was best for us. We never had a bite on our south troll. After the early bite we only took one more fish, a big Coho 69 down on a rigger on an 11″ Green Paddle/Pickled Sunshine Action Fly. We use Erie Dearie Meat on all our meat rigs.
We fished north the last two days setting up in 110 feet of water (fow) just off the bank. The morning bite has been slow for us. There has been fish taken inside in 40 to 70 fow, but the bite has been short lived. we haven’t found any particular depth that is holding a large concentration of fish. We have just been working the water over between the 01’s & o5’s between 120 & 80 fow. By far our best rods have been our high wire divers. We have a 10″ Kevin’s Girlfriend Spin Doctor/Green Mile Big Water Meat Rig on one and the same flasher with a Froggie Big Water Rig on the other. Our best core has been a 10 color with a Natural Glow Captains Choice Cut Plug. We took our biggest King today on a #3 Silver Horde Lighting Plug on a 3 color core.
We fished up north the last three days. We had doubles on Friday and Saturday and just one trip today. The fishing has been decent, but not consistent. We have been starting out between 90 & 120 feet of water (fow) in the morning and then taking it out deep after the action slows. Plugs have been working well for us on 3, 5, & 8 color cores. The Dreamweaver Natural Glow Captains Choice Cut Plug has been our best plug. The water has been cold so we have been running our wire divers shallow. A 10″ Kevin’s Girlfriend Spin Doctor/ Green Mile Big Water Meat Rig out 70 ft. on a high wire diver has been very good for us in the morning. On our afternoon trip on the 16th a 10″ Chrome Frog Spin Doctor/Chrome Frog Dreamweaver Meat Rig went 3 times 56 down on the chute rigger. Today we didn’t go out deep after the morning bite. We stayed inside working in and off the bank. We had just enough action to keep us in there. Early it was all plugs and later in the morning our wire divers with 10″ Spin Doctors and Big Water Meat Rigs started taking fish. We use Erie Dearie Meat on all our meat rigs. We didn’t have a rigger bite today.
We fished the last two days in and near Ludington harbor and in PM Lake. We caught some big ones. Today we had 3 Kings over 25 lbs. Our hot plug was a Dreamweaver Natural Glow Captains Choice Cut Plug set at 18 feet on an out down. Most of our fish came on plugs. We took several on 10″ Spin Doctors and Big Water Meat Rigs. A 10″ Kevin’s Girlfriend Spin Doctor/Green Mile Meat Rig was good in the morning 65 ft. out on a high wire diver. A 10″ Show Time Spin Doctor/Blue Moo Meat Rig out 35 ft. on a low wire diver was good too. We hit fish on 3 & 5 color cores with plugs. Our biggest King today, 25.88 lbs., came on a Super Slim Super Bread spoon 75 out on a Slide Diver in front of the Coast Guard Station. The boat traffic has been heavy, but the action has made it worth putting up with for us.
Good fishing today southwest of Ludington. We ran a double and fished them both between 240 & 475 feet of water. Our mature Kings came on an 11″ White Crush Dreamweaver Paddle/Pickled Sunshine Action Fly 80 ft. down on the chute rigger and a regular size Dreamweaver Wonder Bread spoon on a 200 copper. We took 4 fish on the Paddle and the Wonder Bread spoon was one of our hot baits for the day. Fuzzy Bear Yellow Tail spoons have been our hottest spoons the last couple of trips out there. We have been running them on a high wire diver, a pair on a out down, and one on a 10 color core. A Super Slim Super Bread on a 150 copper took 3 shots on our afternoon trip. A Yeck Fireball out 110 on a high wire was good on our morning trip, but didn’t take a hit in the afternoon. A DW Beefeater spoon 90 ft. out on a low wire took fish on both trips.
After experiencing two slow morning in a row up north, we headed southwest this morning to try our luck out where we fished last night. We set up in 190 feet of water (fow) and trolled west. The morning started out a little slow, but the action picked up when we got outside side 250 fow. All our bites but 2 came on spoons. We took a King and a big Coho 65 down on an 11″ White Crush Dreamweaver Paddle/Pickled Sunshine Action Fly on the chute rigger. The big Laker pictured below came on a mag size Fuzzy Bear Yellow Tail spoon on a 250 copper. A regular size Yellow Tail out 130 on a high wire diver took 4 Steelhead and a mature King. We weren’t having much action on our riggers until we put a pair of Yeck Afro Glows on an out down at 45 feet. They went 3 times in a half hour. A DW Beefeater 100 out on a low wire dive took several shots. We took hits on 5, 7 & 10 color cores and 150, 200, 250, & 300 coppers.
We fished up north this morning and the bite was slow. It was light before we hit our first fish. It took a 10″ Kevin’s Girlfriend Spin Doctor/Green Mile Big Water Rig on an out down set at 45 feet. We had 3 of those rigs out and they all took a hit. Our second biggest King of the morning, 23.50 lbs., came on that rig on a 200 copper. Our biggest King, 25.60 lbs. came on a Natural Glow Dreamweaver Captains Choice Cut Plug on a 7 color core. We pretty much worked a mile either side of the Point trying to catch some big ones, but the bites were few and far between.
We decided to run our afternoon trip southwest of Ludington today. We set up in 190 feet of water(fow) and trolled northwest. We had good action with all of our hits coming in the top 60 feet. A regular size Dreamweaver Beefeater out 80 on a low wire was our best rod. A Yeck Fireball out 110 on a high wire was good too. A regular size Fuzzy Bear Yellow Tail on a 10 color was our best core.
Very tough fishing today. We headed north out of Ludington today and set up just off the bank. We didn’t have all our rods set when an out down set at 45 with a 10″ Kevin’s Girlfriend Spin Doctor/Green Mile Big Water Meat Rig fired. We got that one then the other out down set at 55 with a Green Splatter Back DW Captains Choice Cut Plug took off. We boated that one too. Those were the last 2 fish we boated. The out down with the Green Splatter Back Cut Plug took another hit and a high wire diver out 120 with the Kevin’s Girlfriend rig went too, missed them both. A 150 copper with another Kevin’s Girlfriend rig had a screamer on, but that one got off. A low wire diver out 110 with a 10″ Show Time Spin Doctor/Blue Moo Meat Rig took a hit, and we missed that one. The boat traffic was really bad. By the time we reached the point we had had enough so we headed for deeper water. We took it out to 300 feet and trolled north. We never had a bite out there. We brought it back in in the 05’s to 110 feet and hit one more fish. It took a 10″ Green Chrome NBK Spin Doctor/Green Mile Big Water Meat Rig. It was a big King that we fought for a while before it got off. Like I said, “Very tough fishing today”. We use Erie Dearie Meat on all our meat rigs.
We had to cancel our morning trip yesterday due to the storm that came through. The Lake laid down in the afternoon so ran our p.m. up north. The fishing was good. We had a two person charter so with 1st mate Kevin and me we could only run 12 rods. We had Spin Doctors and Big Water Meat rigs on 11 of them. We set up south of the bath house and trolled north to the Point. We hit fish right away and had good action for the whole trip. One of our low wires out 105 with a 10″ Show Time Spin Doctor/Blue Moo Big Water Meat Rig went 5 times. Our other hot set up was the other low wire out 120 with a 10″ Kevin’s Girlfriend Spin Doctor/Green Mile Big Water Rig. It went 4 times. Our high wire divers were a Kevin’s Girlfriend Rig and a 10″ UV Purple Sparkler/Purple UV Big Water Rig. Most of our early action came on our divers. Toward the end of the trip we started getting bites on our coppers. A 10″ Chrome NBK Mountain Dew Spin Doctor/Moo Moo Big Water Rig on a 300 copper was hot. An 8″ UV Yellow Sparkler Spin Doctor/Green UV Big Water Meat Rig on a 200 copper went twice. Our only rod that didn’t have a meat rig on it was a 150 copper with a Captains Choice Michigan Shiner Cut Plug. We took 1 fish on it.
We headed back up north for our morning trip today and set up in the same general area as last night. We hit 8 fish on our first pass and only boated 2 of them. One got into our low wire diver and broke off. The other 5 just got off. After that first pass our action slowed. You can see by the picture above the fish we did land we mostly jumbos. Our biggest today was a 25.50 lb. King. Six of our fish weighed over 20 lbs. A 10″ Kevin’s Girlfriend Spin Doctor/Green Mile Rig set at 45 ft. on an out down went 4 times. Our hot diver was high wire out 170 with a 10″ Show Time Spin Doctor/ Blue Moo Big Water Rig. Our 200 copper with the UV Yellow Sparkler/Green UV Meat rig took 2 fish. A 10″ Chrome Kevorkian Spin Doctor/UV On Ice Big Water Rig went once and a 300 copper with a 10″ Chrome NBK Mountain Dew Spin Doctor/Moo Moo Meat Rig took our biggest fish of the day.
We fished north of Ludington today setting up in 100 feet of water (fow) on the bank. Some boats hit fish early, but we did not have an early bite. After we passed the Point we turned out to try our luck in deeper water. We started marking schools of bait in 140 fow and we hit our first fish, a big King, on a 10″ Purple Sparkle Spin Doctor/Purple UV Big Water Meat Rig out 110 on a high wire diver. While we were fighting that fish our out down set at 40 ft. fired with a pair of glow spoons. That fish turned out to be a nice Brown. We worked between the bath house and just north of the Point most of the morning between 120 & 150 fow. Most of our fish came on 10″ Spin Doctors and Big Water Meat Rigs on our wire divers. We took 1 more on the Purple Sparkle/Purple UV rig and our best set up was a 10″ Kevin’s Girlfriend Spin Doctor/Green Mile Big Water Meat Rig 120 out on a high wire. Only 1 plug bite. It came on a Natural Glow Captains Choice Cut Plug on a 10 color core. We headed back up there for our afternoon trip setting up in 130 fow by the bath house. We hit our first fish just north of the Point on the Purple Sparkle rig out 130 on a high wire diver. Almost all our action came on our wire divers. We had 10 bites and landed 4 big Kings. They would hit our divers, make a big run and be gone. Again, our best rig was the 10″ Kevin’s Girlfriend Spin Doctor/Green Mile Meat Rig on a high wire. A 10″ Show Time Spine Doctor/Blue Moo Rig on a low wire went twice. We bait our all meat rigs with Erie Dearie Meat.
We fished southwest of Ludington today. There were quite a few boats in the area between the pier heads and the project from 40 to 120 feet of water (fow). We set up in 70 fow and trolled out to 100 on our first pass. Our first bites came on an out down set at 50 feet with a pair of glow spoons. We took 3 of our biggest fish on a high wire diver out 120 with a 10″ Kevin’s Girlfriend Spin Doctor/Green Mile Big Water meat Rig and Erie Dearie Meat. We lost a big King on the chute rigger down 60 with a 10″ Glow Blade Spin Doctor/Green Mirage Strong Fly. We took another big one on a 10 color core with a regular size Dreamweaver Beefeater spoon. No plug bites for us today, but several boats reported they were having some success with them. We stayed between the pier heads and the project all morning. The boats that ran offshore to where we have been fishing reported that it was slow again today.
Tough fishing today. We had a great day yesterday so headed southwest out of Ludington today to the same area hoping to duplicate yesterdays action. We set up in 180 feet of water (fow) and trolled southwest out to 420 fow. The morning didn’t start out too bad, we took a couple of Steelhead on our 40 & 60 down riggers. The waves were building and were 2 to 4 feet high. We took a couple more fish both on a 10 color core with a regular size Fuzzy Bear Hot Rod spoon. We took 1 more fish on our out down set at 40 ft. then the bites stopped. We were working over the same area where we have been taking our fish the last few days. Other boats out there weren’t having much success either. The consensus seemed to be that the fish were there, but they just weren’t biting.
We have been fishing out deep the last few days. It was a little rough out there today, but our crew held up and were rewarded with a good catch. We fished between 180 and 420 feet of water (fow) south west of Ludington. Todays catch was mostly Coho salmon and Steelhead with a big Lake Trout thrown in. We’ve caught two big Lakers the last two days. The one pictured right hit a regular size Fuzzy Bear Modified Blue Dolphin 60 down on our chute rigger. The majority of our fish are hitting our cores, coppers and divers. We have been running 1 seven, 2 eight & 2 ten color cores and 2 150 and 2 200 coppers. We’ve been running a high & low wire diver on each side. Our riggers have been at 40 and 50 on the out downs and 60 on the chute. We’ve had a Yeck Fireball out 150 ft. on one high and a regular Dreamweaver Beefeater out 130 on the other. We have 10″ Spin Doctors and Big Water Meat Rigs on our low wires. Today the 10″ Glow Blade Spin Doctor/Blue UV Big Water Meat Rig out 95 took a couple nice fish. Last night on our afternoon trip we took a 23.45 lb. King (pictured below left) on a 8″ UV Lizard Spin Doctor/Green UV Big Water Rig on a 200 copper . We had another big King hit the same rig , but that one got away. A regular Fuzzy Bear Hot Rod spoon on a 10 color core has been good and so has a regular DW Beefeater. Our best 150 copper bait has been a regular Fuzzy Bear Yellowtail spoon and a mag size Fuzzy Bear NBK has been good on a 200 copper. The action has been good out there, but the fish can be hard to get in the boat. Those Coho have been wild. I’ve heard reports of some big Kings being caught between 60 and 120 fow between the harbor and the project. The bite has been early and doesn’t last long.
